Boswellia is called Indian Frankincense and is known as a true super-food shown to have remarkable healing and anti-inflammatory properties that are just now being discovered.
Boswellia serrata is the form that is most known for its healing properties. The beneficial compounds are found in the resin that is secreted naturally to protect the tree from parasites, insects and pathogens. This resin is easily tapped and purified for use and consists of essential oils, gum and terpenoids.
Boswellia contains boswellic acids that have strong anti-inflammatory properties that block the overproduction of cytokinetic activity in damaged tissues while enhancing blood flow to joints. This combination has been shown to increase joint mobility and ease stiff joints making it tremendously successful at treating challenging inflammatory conditions such as with Crohn’s, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and allergies, osteoarthritis and ulcerative colitis. As if that isn’t enough, the powerful anti-inflammatory compounds are being recommended for cancer and heart disease prevention.
There are many studies to back the claim that boswellia is just as effective as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Boswellia is a safe and natural alternative to commercial drugs, in my opinion.
Aside from its amazing anti-inflammatory properties, boswellia has a host of other beneficial uses as well. A recent review highlighted its many uses: arthritis, diarrhea, dysentery, ringworm, boils, fevers (antipyretic), skin and blood diseases, cardiovascular diseases, mouth sores, bad throat, bronchitis, asthma, cough, vaginal discharges, hair loss, jaundice, hemorrhoids, syphilitic diseases, irregular menses and liver stimulation. Boswellia has accumulated scientific data supporting its anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory uses, along with the ability to lower cholesterol, prevent plaque buildup, and defend your liver.
